The Matrix Resurrections shares stunning 10-minute opener online | Movies

Anyone who thought The Matrix Resurrections would be your banal sequel (or, ‘requel’, to quote the new Scream) had obviously not been paying attention. The Wachowskis don’t do anything halfway — even when there’s only one Wachowski (here, Lana, directing and co-writing without her sister Lilly for the first time). And while reactions to the fourth film in the sci-fi cyberpunk saga have been polarized, its opening sequence is full of thrills. If you mean tumbling down the meta rabbit hole, Resurrections is an absolute headtrip right off the bat. Whether you’ve already seen the film on the big screen or are waiting to watch it at home, check out the full, uncut 10-minute opening sequence here.

Resurrections then begins as a Matrix movie. Or, more precisely, exactly as The matrix. Except the leather-clad hacker at the keyboard isn’t Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity, but some sort of look-alike, and new hero Bugs (an excellent Jessica Yu Li Henwick) correctly comments, “It’s not the story we think so. From there it only gets wilder – a rooftop chase with a different outcome, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II playing a hybrid of Morpheus and Agent Smith, and a tense conversation between Morph-Smith and Bugs in Thomas Anderson’s old bedroom… to know exactly what’s going on here and why – and how it connects to Keanu Reeves’ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss’ Trinity – you’ll have to watch the full movie.

The clip arrives ahead of the Home Premiere digital rental release of The Matrix Resurrections next week – it will be available for premium rental from Monday 31 January, good news for anyone who wants to take the red pill again.
